Student Evaluation
The Colorado Search and Rescue Association's CalTopo course has two main objectives:
- By the end of this course, students will be able to utilize CalTopo skills in mapping of a search and/or rescue incident.
- By the end of this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of the CSAR Best Practices for CalTopo mapping.
Additionally:
- This self-paced course will be offered at no cost to all CSAR members. CSAR members will receive a course password yearly.
- Non-members may register at this link at a course cost of $150: https://revenue-usa.keela.co/caltopo-course-registration-non-csar-member. The registration confirmation page of this includes the course password, so don't skip past it!
- This course is offered exclusively online and will require your own access to a computer and an internet connection that is sufficient enough to stream video.
- This course will consist of asynchronous video instruction, independent map problems, and access to a diverse group of CalTopo users from amongst member teams to answer questions and provide feedback when requested.
- This course utilizes four tiers of instruction, designed to develop a brand new CalTopo user in to a competent CalTopo mapper.
- Each tier concludes with an independent map problem. Solution keys are provided, and we highly encourage completion of the problem before review of the solution.
- Completion of the course includes submission of feedback in Tier 4.

An enjoyable jaunt through mapping
I use Caltopo almost daily to plan hikes and bike tours in addition to SAR, so I'm pretty familiar but learned some new things that I've already applied to my practice. Time well spent.

CalTopo Primer
Like drinking from a firehose, it's a ton of information and details to learn and apply. It took me over a dozen hours to complete all of the assignments. But after exhaustive effort, correction, and refinement I'm fairly confident I can put together usable maps that are appropriate and concisely informative. I'm sure more practice and experience will improve my skills and presentation. But I'm ready to tackle future challenges with a consistent framework and understanding of SAR terminology and best practices.
